There is a big misconception with both "toning up" and "dieting".
Firstly "Dieting". If your going to the gym, then you need calories to burn, you need good quality carbohydrates, proteins and nutrients to build muscle, an increase in muscle quality and size will increase the need for more calories (or speeding up metabolism)
Dieting sends the body in to an economic mode ready for starvation, this slow metabolism and makes the body hold on to fat cells as much as it can. The dieter then needs to diet even more to lose weight and the viscous circle begins.
Eating a good healthy diet and doing both Cardiovascular work outs and weights/weight machine work outs (in different sessions) is the best way to burn fat and speed up metabolism.
Now, "toning up". for some strange reason people believe doing leg exercises will burn fat from your legs, or doing arm exercises will burn fat from the arms! Fat is burned from where ever the body is wired to burn fat from. So if you have fat covering any particular part of your body working the muscles under that fat will do nothing. Doing both Cardiovascular work outs and weights/weight machine work outs will both burn fat -with a goal to reaching the trouble spots of the body and build muscle to give the appearance of tone.
